Vectric Aspire CNC STL Import Tutorial
Step-by-step workflow for importing a 3D STL model into Vectric Aspire, preparing CNC toolpaths, and checking a bas-relief carving preview.
Stage 1
Create A New File
- Open Vectric Aspire.
- Create a new file.
Stage 2
Set Up The Job
- Change the Job Size fields to match your wood block dimensions.
- Click OK.
*Note: You can set Material Type (wood, brass, etc.).
*Note: You can set X/Y Datum Position to control where your machine starts.
Stage 3
Open Import Menu
- In the top toolbar, click File > Import > Import Component / 3D Model.
Stage 4
Select STL Model
- Select your 3D STL model.
- Click Open.
Stage 5
Scale And Align
- Set Initial Orientation to best align the model to the block.
- Set model height to the same value used in your Job Size.
- Click Apply.
*Note: The model may first appear at the wrong size before you set the correct height.
Stage 6
Check Front View
- Switch orientation to Front to inspect fit.
*Note: This verifies the model fits the block profile correctly.
Stage 7
Position Model
- Click Position and Import.
Stage 8
Set Relative Position
- Drag the Position relative to Modelling Plane slider all the way down.
Stage 9
Return To Top View
- Change orientation back to Top for better perspective.
- Click Import.
Stage 10
Open Toolpaths Panel
- From the menu bar, click Toolpaths > Show Toolpaths Tab.
Stage 11
Start Roughing Toolpath
- Click 3D Roughing Toolpath.
Stage 12
Confirm Toolpath Dialog
- Click OK.
Stage 13
Calculate Roughing
- Select a relatively large cutter for rough stock removal.
- Set Machining Limit Boundary to Material Boundary.
- Click Calculate.
Stage 14
Preview Simulation
- Click Play to preview the simulated cutter path.
Stage 15
Close Simulation
- Click Close.
Stage 16
Save Toolpath
- Click the Save Toolpath icon.
Stage 17
Select Post Processor
- Select a post-processor that matches your machine/controller.
- Click Save Toolpath.
*Note: If needed, download/install a machine-specific post-processor (for example, search for your machine model + post-processor).
Stage 18
Export For Machine
- Save the toolpath to a location your machine controller can read.
*Note: USB media is common, but workflow depends on your controller setup.
